Dogs:
Worthy of
comment. They are everywhere in India. Millions of them. Hounds seem to live
peaceably alongside human beings-- no one taking ownership. The dogs seem to
have common look to them all—that is greyish
(or was that a white, that never got washed?). They are rather large in
size, tend to have quite
pointed thin faces and frequently a one ear that is
floppy, one erect. During the day, the street dogs of India wander about
scrounging for food; all the rest of time lying spread-eagled in the burning
heat, on the side walks or just about anywhere else they wish. So far, while I
have never seen anyone actually throw food scraps to the canines, I have never
seen anyone mistreat or be intentionally cruel—that’s just the way it is. Live
and let live.
Someone knows how to keep cool... |
Approaching 9.30 pm, when human street action tends to die down, the
sleeping dogs wake up and take over. Those dozy mutts seem to re-form themselves
into packs and a number of times I have witnessed ugly
inter pack action, leaders reasserting the pecking order and chasing off
others who could be attempting to move in territorially. This dog warfare and
the eery howling continues all night long
The
ground is littered with feces--not disriminating, dog & human variety too, just another foul odour in the
polluted air.
A
major government sponsored dog roundup is urgently needed for health reasons.Only seen two cats so far.
